Candles, leaves, books… become the main character of your story this autumn.

Autumn is an inspiring season. The cold air, the crunchy leaves, the warm tones of pumpkins and apple pie… There is no better time to romanticize your life than this glorious season. Get in that storybook main character spirit with these five autumnal activities:

🍁 Play in the leaves

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about autumn is the changing leaves. They cover the ground in a sea of yellows, oranges and reds. Their crunchy sound is the most comforting. Walking around the park or the forest, in a warm coat and chunky scarf, will make you feel like the main character of an autumnal fairytale.

📚 Read a book on a rainy day

Not all autumn days are filled with sunshine… Some days will be dark and rainy. For those melancholy days, I have a remedy that always works: picking up a cosy book, making a cup of coffee or tea, and wrapping up in a blanket. Reading while listening to the rain outside always feels special. My current autumn/Halloween read is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs. Perfect to set a spooky atmosphere!

A pretty book (The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield) is sitting on a desk, with a cup of coffee and a candle holder beside it.

🕯️ Spend an evening by candlelight

Every autumn, there is one tradition I like to keep: lighting candles and fairy lights. As the days grow shorter and darker, keeping your home filled with light will make your evenings special. This year, I have bought a vintage brass candlestick holder at a flea market. This new addition adds a vintage, Gothic touch to my autumn decor that makes me feel like a Charlotte Bronte heroine! Check out flea markets around you to find beautiful candle holders and visit stores like TK Maxx/TJ Maxx for autumn scented candles, as well as Etsy to support small creators.

🍎 Go apple picking

From September, you can do one of my favourite autumnal activities: apple picking! Check Google Maps for produce farms in your area. Bring a wicker basket and waterproof boots, and get ready for a fun morning or afternoon apple (and pumpkin) picking. Apple picking is fun and very rewarding, I have been going for three autumns now and it has turned into a lovely family activity.

🥧 Bake a seasonal recipe

With the apples you picked, it’s time to bake something! Baking in autumn is very pleasant because it fills the house with warms and a delicious scent. Some seasonal recipes you could try are apple pie, cinnamon and apple jam, pumpkin soup, banana bread… Baking a seasonal recipe is the best way to start off gently a Saturday or Sunday morning.
